Evironmentally Conscious hOme 1

Kevin Chu of Coc design

Hong Kong luxury residential design embraces environmental consciousness

Hong Kong, like many other major cities in Asia, faces numerous environmental challenges such as air pollution, limited living spaces, and heavy reliance on imported agricultural products. In response to these issues, Kevin Chu of Coc design has created the Environmentally Conscious hOme 1, a luxury interior that promotes sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Chu's vision for the project is to redefine luxury by using environmentally friendly materials and technologies. The interior of the hOme 1 is designed to be "helpful" rather than "burdensome" to the green cause. By utilizing recycled and artificial materials with ethical manufacturing practices, Chu aims to create a healthier living environment while minimizing the impact on the planet.

The hOme 1 incorporates eco-furniture, low-energy appliances, and green energy systems carefully sourced and selected by Chu. The interior spatial organization maximizes usage while maintaining a contemporary and minimalistic aesthetic. One of the standout features of the design is the rooftop, which not only adds beauty to the space but also implements the latest techniques in horizontal and vertical farming. The entire interior is illuminated with low-voltage LED lighting, while the rooftop is powered by solar energy.

The Evironmentally Conscious hOme 1 is made up of 80% recycled and upcycled building components and products, without compromising on luxury. The design showcases Chu's dedication to creating a sustainable and visually stunning living space.

Key features of the hOme 1 include reclaimed OSB particle panels, recycled cardboard pendant lamps, low-water-usage automated bathrooms, and a self-sufficient rooftop vegetable farm. The design also incorporates solar lighting, BPA-free polystyrene storage systems, and upcycled furniture. Organic cotton is used for the sofa fabrics, further emphasizing the commitment to eco-friendly materials.

The hOme 1 spans approximately 220 square meters, with a living area of 110 square meters and a rooftop area of the same size. The project was completed in November 2016, following extensive research and sourcing of eco-friendly materials and furniture.

The Evironmentally Conscious hOme 1 challenges the perception that recycled designs cannot be luxurious. It demonstrates that contemporary luxury living can coexist with a reduced reliance on natural resources and the use of imitation materials. With its spacious and contemporary feel, the hOme 1 sets a new standard for environmentally conscious interior design.

The Evironmentally Conscious hOme 1 was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
